The Irishman went on to hail Scottie Scheffler as a ‘generational talent’ ahead of the US Open

37-year-old Lowry was speaking after a mixed display at last weekend’s ‘Signature’ Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio and Murifield Village Golf Club.

He holed out three times on Saturday afternoon to card a -4 round before a horror +13 final round on Sunday in the penultimate Signature event of the PGA Tour season.

American Scheffler sealed his fifth win in eight events as he landed another $3.6m payout with a one-stroke win over Colin Morikawa.

World number 33 Lowry, who finished 3rd to 27-year-old Scheffler at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this season, hailed the American as a generational talent.

The Irishman credited the Texan for always making the correct shot before admitting that he himself must be better on the greens if he’s to compete at Pinehurst No.2 this weekend in North Carolina.

Speaking to SKY Sports, Lowry said: “Scottie is putting himself out there as a generational talent.

“I’ve played with him a couple of times this year, including the final round at Bay Hill, where he won, and he’s not ridiculously impressive

“But he just hits the ball exactly where you’re supposed to and he does the right things.

“I think the big thing for Scottie is his bad golf is really good. And when he hits a bad shot, he generally leaves it in a place where he’s going to make a par. He makes very few bogeys.

Lowry weighed-in on his own US Open chances, the Clara native has been solid from tee-to-green this year as he ranks in some of the top stats with Driver, Iron and wedge in hand.

But the putter has been hot and cold throughout the last 18-months.

He added: “What do I need to do to catch up to someone like that? – I feel like a lot of my game is pretty good – I feel like I drive the ball pretty good and my iron play is up there with some of the top players in the world.

“So I know when I rock up at tournaments, if I hole a few putts, I can do well that week.

“So, for me, it’s just trying to become a more consistent putter.

“I’m working as hard as I can and as hard as I ever have on what I feel are the right things, and hopefully, it clicks a couple of times a year.

“I’m hoping it clicks next week.”

All the action is live on SKY Sports from Thursday afternoon.
